Alphabet loses over $100 billion after Google’s ChatGPT rival Bard makes mistake

Google’s AI chatbot Bard’s incorrect response resulted in a 7.7 percent drop in Alphabet’s shares

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, experienced a market value loss of $100 billion following an error made by its new AI chatbot Bard in a promotional video.

During a demo in the “Live from Paris” virtual event, which was posted by Google on Twitter, a user asks Bard: “What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9 year old about?”

Bard responds with a series of bullet points, including one that reads: “JWST took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.”

However, according to NASA, the first image of an exoplanet, which is a planet outside of our solar system, was actually captured by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in 2004, nearly 20 years ago.

Bard’s incorrect response resulted in a 7.7 percent drop in Alphabet’s shares, causing a loss of over $100 billion in market value, according to reports.

A Google representative highlighted the significance of thorough testing following Bard’s mistake, stating that the company is launching a “Trusted Tester program” this week to address this issue.

The company further added that it is taking feedback into consideration to guarantee that Bard’s responses meet a high standard in terms of quality, safety, and accuracy of information before its release to the general public.
