Cisco unveils AI-powered strategy for Webex to bolster hybrid work

New Webex AI Assistant brings together RMM and Large Language Models (LLMs) to help hybrid workers and contact center agents do their jobs better

Global technology player Cisco recently introduced a new AI strategy for its Webex platform, with a focus on improving real-time communication and collaboration. Unlike typical AI solutions, which predominantly handle text and documents, Cisco aims to use AI to enhance audio and video communications to tackle everyday challenges.

One notable aspect of this strategy is the introduction of Real-Time Media Models (RMMs) within Webex. These models leverage visual and audible cues, such as gestures and participants leaving a meeting, to provide context for human interactions. The RMMs aim to enhance audio and video quality and enable audio and video channels to be used for context signals in text-based summaries and highlights. For instance, the system can recognise when a participant steps away from a meeting and capture relevant notes for their return.

Cisco also launched a new AI Codec for Webex to improve audio quality, particularly in situations with low network bandwidth. The AI Codec ensures clear audio by incorporating features like transmission redundancy and speech enhancement functions.

In addition, machine learning techniques are used to enhance video quality using Super Resolution, providing high-definition video quality regardless of network conditions.

Cisco’s Webex AI Assistant will offer various capabilities to enhance productivity and reduce IT-related work. These include providing recommended changes to message tone, suggested responses for contact center agents, and meeting and message summaries for easier catch-up. The AI Assistant is set to be integrated across the Webex portfolio.

Cisco’s approach to responsible AI emphasises security, privacy, and human rights. Their AI offerings align with the Responsible AI Framework, ensuring transparency, fairness, accountability, and reliability.

The new AI strategy is designed to empower users in the evolving landscape of hybrid work, offering solutions to common challenges in modern work environments.
