Dubai signs deal to enhance drone flight routes

The deal will see the creation of a streamlined plan and infrastructure for the development of new drone technologies

The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) and Dubai Municipality announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the Dubai Horizons project.

The new initiative focuses on the planning of drone flight routes and landing sites.

Over a three-year period, both parties will combine their expertise in generating geospatial data for the emirate and their knowledge in the unmanned aerial vehicle industry.

The trial phase of the project will take place at Dubai Silicon Oasis. Its objective is to establish cooperative networks that foster an optimal environment for the deployment and advancement of new drone technologies. Additionally, the project aims to align Dubai’s air dome system and unmanned aircraft traffic management with the emirate’s comprehensive urban plan. By supporting Dubai’s future air mobility plans, the project will contribute to enhancing the emirate’s global competitiveness and achieving its ambitious goals.

The MoU was signed by Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, and Mohammed Abdulla Ahli, Director General of the DCAA.

Al Hajri expressed enthusiasm for strategic partnerships and agreements that expand cooperation and facilitate the exchange of expertise and knowledge across various fields. “By enhancing the process of site planning for airports and airfields designated for drones, the new agreement will support the development of the aviation industry. Our partnership with the DCAA will strengthen Dubai’s position as a centre of innovation in the aviation industry and create an encouraging climate for investment in the sector.”

Dubai Municipality will grant the DCAA direct access to an online portal containing geospatial databases, digital geospatial data, and 3D charts in Dubai Silicon Oasis. Additionally, the municipality will provide the necessary servers and geospatial databases for storing and publishing this data and 3D charts on appropriate systems.
