Formula E: How tech steered Jaguar TCS racing team to victory

Unlike Formula 1 racing, Formula E is about precision

ABB FIA Formula E is an electrifying realm where every second counts and technology plays a pivotal role in determining success on the track. Jaguar TCS Racing’s recent triumph in Diriyah, with Nick Cassidy claiming his first victory of Season 10, and becoming the only driver to podium in all three races so far this season in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, showcased not just the driver’s skill but also the technological prowess behind the scenes, thanks to the team’s title and technical sponsor, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

TCS, a global technology services and consulting company, has been instrumental in providing the advanced technological infrastructure that sets Jaguar TCS Racing apart in the highly competitive Formula E landscape. In an exclusive, the key elements that contributed to this victory were unveiled, emphasising the role technology played in the team’s success.

Unlike Formula 1 racing, Formula E is about precision. It is a laboratory for the future of electric mobility, laying the groundwork for upcoming road cars. The series provides manufacturers with a competitive platform to experiment and advance the latest in electric technology.

Technology and decision systems

In Formula E, where races are decided in seconds, the importance of quick and precise decision-making cannot be overstated. TCS has implemented top-edge fail-proof cloud solutions, where data and decision systems operate seamlessly. This technology ensures that crucial decisions, be it regarding strategy or real-time adjustments, are made swiftly, giving the team a competitive edge.

The utilisation of digital twin technology is another feather in the cap for Jaguar TCS Racing team. A digital twin is a virtual representation of the real world, and TCS employs it effectively to mimic the race track, allowing drivers like Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans to digitally test every track before hitting the actual circuit. “Thanks to this (digital twin virtual representation), I can virtually navigate every turn, giving me the confidence to push the limits when it matters most,” said Nick Cassidy.

Sustainability at the core

Beyond technology, TCS is a champion of sustainability. “Formula E is the only Net Zero sport, and TCS ensures that its involvement extends beyond just the race. The partnership emphasises the eco-friendly design of Jaguar’s Generation 3 cars, showcasing a commitment to sustainability from the conceptual stage. TCS is actively involved in initiatives to repurpose and reuse materials, contributing to the overall goal of creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly racing ecosystem,” said Sumanta Roy, Vice President and Head of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) MEA.

As Formula E moves to Sao Paulo for the next round, the TCS-backed Jaguar racing team is undoubtedly one to watch, with their eyes set on more podiums and milestones in the seasons to come.
