Alphabet’s Google has agreed to invest as much as $2 billion in the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, according to a spokesperson for the startup.
The initial investment amounts to $500 million, with an agreement to provide an additional $1.5 billion over time. This underscores Google’s increased efforts to compete with Microsoft, a significant supporter of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, in the race among major tech companies to integrate AI into their applications.
Amazon.com also recently announced its intention to invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic to compete with emerging cloud competitors in the AI space. In its quarterly report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Amazon disclosed an investment of $1.25 billion in a convertible note from Anthropic, with the option to invest an additional $2.75 billion in a second note by the first quarter of 2024.
Anthropic, co-founded by former executives of OpenAI, Dario and Daniela Amodei, is actively securing resources and influential backers to compete with OpenAI and establish leadership in the tech sector.
