Is OpenAI the new Apple? 9 key highlights from DevDay 2023

OpenAI hosted DevDay, the company’s first-ever developer conference, where it announced key updates and offerings

Sam Alman, CEO, OpenAI

OpenAI held its first-ever developer conference, DevDay, in San Francisco this week. The event featured a series of remarkable announcements, highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing the field of artificial intelligence.

The enthusiasm of techies and developers at the OpenAI DevDay was nothing short of remarkable, according to reports. In fact, Business Insider likened the atmosphere during the keynote to the electrifying energy of a Steve Jobs iPhone launch.

During the event, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, also emphasised the importance of the company’s collaboration with Microsoft, emphasising their strong partnership. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, echoed similar sentiments, underscoring their shared goal to empower people and organisations worldwide through AI.

Here are the key highlights from OpenAI DevDay 2023:

ChatGPT milestone

A year since its launch, ChatGPT has garnered over 100 million individuals utilise the tool on a weekly basis, according to OpenAI. Remarkably, ChatGPT achieved the milestone of 100 million monthly users within just a few months of its initial release, making it one of the fastest-adopted consumer products.

Additionally, OpenAI has highlighted that more than 2 million developers are actively crafting solutions using its API.

Make your own ChatGPT

Among the announcements made at OpenAI DevDay, the standout offering was the custom versions of ChatGPT, which doesn’t require any coding knowledge. This means anyone can build a chatbot just by talking to it and feeding it text, images, or other content. Enterprise users can also build internal GPTs, which can be built on top of their company’s knowledge base. Developers can connect GPTs to databases or knowledge bases such as emails to import external information, according to the company.

Sell your GPT

OpenAI plans to launch the GPT Store in the coming months, providing a platform for users to discover and use AI creations from verified builders. This presents an exciting opportunity for users to potentially earn money through their AI innovations.

API integration for data and task automation

Developers can now seamlessly connect GPTs to the real world through APIs, enabling data integration and specific task automation. Businesses can create internal GPTs to streamline processes across various departments.

GPT-4 Turbo

OpenAI unveiled GPT-4 Turbo, an enhanced version of GPT-4, boasting a 128,000-token context window. This remarkable capability allows it to process the equivalent of over 300 pages of text in a single prompt, with knowledge extended up to April 2023. GPT-4 Turbo is available in two versions, one specialised in text analysis and another proficient in both text and image understanding. It is accessible through an API, offering a competitive price of $0.01 per 1,000 input tokens and $0.03 per 1,000 output tokens. Notably, it is more cost-effective than GPT-4.

In addition, GPT-4 Turbo now accepts images as inputs within the Chat Completions API, enabling tasks like generating image captions, detailed real-world image analysis, and document reading with figures.

Assistants API

Developers can now leverage the Assistants API to create AI-driven assistants for various applications. These assistants can perform specific tasks, utilise additional knowledge, and employ models and tools. The API offers features like Code Interpreter and Retrieval, simplifying complex tasks and enabling the development of high-quality AI applications. It also introduces persistent and infinitely long threads for message handling.

DALL·E 3 integration

DALL·E 3 can be seamlessly integrated into various applications and products by developers via OpenAI’s Images API, offering creative possibilities for organisations like Snapchat, Coca-Cola, and Shutterstock.

Text-to-Speech enhancement

OpenAI introduced the Audio API, a text-to-speech tool with six distinct voices. Pricing starts at $0.015 for every 1,000 input characters. OpenAI also provides access to Whisper large-v3, the latest iteration of their open-source automatic speech recognition model, with improved performance across various languages.

Copyright shield

To address concerns regarding copyright infringement, OpenAI introduced the Copyright Shield programme. OpenAI is ready to support and cover legal expenses for customers facing copyright infringement claims, including ChatGPT Enterprise and developer platform features.

Previously, tech companies such as Microsoft, Google-backed Cohere, Amazon and IBM have pledged that they’ll defend customers against IP infringement claims.
