Liz Reid takes on the role of head of search for Google

The Google’s search team is seeing several changes, apart from Liz Reid taking on the lead role

Liz Reid, a Google veteran for over 20 years has taken on the role as the head of search for Google. She has most recently been leading the company’s efforts with AI search or Search Generative Experience (SGE). The Google’s search team is seeing several changes, apart from Reid taking on the lead role, Pandu Nayak, who has for a long time been responsible for overseeing ranking and quality is going to be the chief scientist of Search.

Nayak has been credited as the foremost expert on ranking, algorithms, and information systems by Google.

Cheenu Ventakachary, will take over Nayak’s role and lead the Google Search quality and ranking teams. Venkatachary had worked at Google between May 2008 and December 2014, he left for a company that was acquired by Apple, he later returned to Google in October 2022.

Cathy Edwards, who has been working on Google Discover and Google News is moving back to Australia and joining the Long-term bets team. Edwards was the co-founder of Chomp, that was acquired by Apple. She will help incubate new product ideas in partnerships with leaders across information and knowledge.

This move cements the idea that Google believes AI to be the future of search. Sundar Pichai, CEO Google has been vocal on language models and how AI can improve the quality of search results.
