Microsoft officially ended support for the “mixed reality” feature in Windows, which enabled certain hardware devices and software to leverage augmented and virtual reality technologies.

Introduced in a Windows 10 update in 2017, the mixed reality portal app facilitated access to this technology on personal computers through compatible VR headsets. Microsoft uses the term “mixed reality” to encompass software that combines both augmented and virtual reality.

Augmented reality overlays text, sounds, graphics, and video onto real-world images, enhancing the user’s view, while virtual reality immerses users in computer-generated environments.

In an announcement, Microsoft stated, “Windows mixed reality is deprecated and will be removed in a future release of Windows.”
