Survey shows UAE residents prefer AI assistants tailored to local culture

Close to 92% of respondents favor AI designed for the region’s cultural and linguistic needs, according to a recent survey.

A recent survey conducted by Researchscape International and commissioned by global tech company Yango reveals that 92 per cent of respondents in the UAE would prefer a smart/AI assistant specifically designed for the Middle East. This preference underscores the desire for features that align with the region’s cultural and linguistic nuances.

The survey highlights several key features that respondents value in an AI assistant. Notably, 66% of respondents emphasized the importance of the assistant being able to answer questions about Arabic culture, literature, and traditions. Additionally, 65 per cent of respondents expressed the desire for the assistant to inform users of prayer times globally and play Surahs from the Quran. Furthermore, 46 per cent would like the assistant to provide Hijri calendar dates.

Language plays a significant role in the respondents’ preferences. The survey reveals that a considerable number of participants speak Arabic at home, with Khaleeji (40 per cent), Egyptian (32 per cent), and Levantine (27 per cent) dialects being the most prevalent. Consequently, 63 per cent of respondents indicated the need for an assistant who speaks and understands Khaleeji Arabic.

“At Yango, we aim to create a human-like AI assistant, which requires a deep understanding of local culture. That’s why, in developing our Arabic-speaking smart assistant, Yasmina, we went beyond basic tasks like streaming music or turning on smart home appliances. Yasmina is culturally attuned to the Middle East and can provide users with Hijri calendar dates and play Surahs from the Quran, among other features,” said Samer Mohamad, Yasmina Regional Director for MENA, Yango.

The survey also reveals broader expectations for AI assistants. Respondents believe that an AI assistant should perform tasks such as finding information (54 per cent), organizing the day (54%), and playing music that fits their mood (41 per cent). Additionally, 57 per cent of respondents expect an AI assistant to manage smart home devices, and 51 per cent look for it to simplify everyday tasks and routines.

Yango’s AI-powered entertainment super app, Yango Play, integrates Yasmina. This smart assistant enhances the user experience by suggesting songs, chatting with users, and answering various questions, from weather updates to Ramadan dates. Yasmina can tailor music suggestions based on user requests, such as “Yasmina, play relaxing music,” and offers entertainment knowledge, providing fun facts about actors and films.

By guiding users through the Yango Play app, Yasmina ensures a streamlined and enjoyable experience.

The findings are based on an online survey conducted among 500 participants from the UAE between February 7th and 20th, 2024. Yango commissioned the study, which was carried out by Researchscape International.
