What is xAI? Everything you need to know about Elon Musk’s ChatGPT alternative

xAI is the new project by Elon Musk which is expected to be an alternative to ChatGPT

xAI, Elon Musk's ChatGPT alternative

Elon Musk has officially launched his long-awaited artificial intelligence startup called xAI. The business wants to compete with OpenAI in the creation of a ChatGPT substitute. The CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, has frequently voiced his concerns about the possible risks posed by AI and the need for industry regulation.

What is xAI?

Musk discussed his strategy for creating a more secure AI during a Twitter Spaces event. Instead of explicitly coding morality into the AI, xAI will concentrate on developing a highly inquisitive AI. Musk is of the opinion that assisting AI in comprehending the fundamental nature of the cosmos will increase its security and make it intrinsically pro-humanity.

Musk also made a bold prediction, stating that superintelligence—AI that surpasses human intelligence—will be achieved within the next five to six years.

The goal of xAI is to “understand the true nature of the universe”. Though the company has promised to share more information over the next couple of weeks and months, our research shows that xAI will be an alternative to ChatGPT.

The xAI team

The xAI team is made up of eminent engineers from well-known IT firms. Elon Musk, the head of Tesla and SpaceX, is in charge of the group. The team has previously held positions at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and the University of Toronto. In particular, the Adam optimiser, Batch Normalisation, Layer Normalisation, and the identification of adversarial examples are some of the techniques that are collectively developed that are among the most commonly applied in the area.

Additionally, the team introduced cutting-edge methods and analyses like Transfer, Transformer-XL, Autoformalisation, Memorising Transformer, Batch Size Scaling, and the Autoformalisation Transformer. Some of the biggest advancements in the field, such as AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4, were developed by the or under their direction.

This team comprises Greg Yang, a former employee of Microsoft, Igor Babuschkin, a former engineer at Google’s DeepMind, Tony Wu, a former Google employee, and Christian Szegedy, a former research scientist. The xAI team will receive advice from Centre for AI Safety head Dan Hendrycks as well.

The website also lists down other team members including Manuel Kroiss, Jimmy Ba, Toby Pohlen, Ross Nordeen, Kyle Kosic, Guodong Zhang and Zihang Dai.

xAI vs ChatGPT: Which is better?

xAI is still in the conceptual phase and does not have the resources that something the size of OpenAI would have that are freely accessible.

How is xAI connected to X Corp

While xAi is a separate business from X Corp, they are expected to collaborate closely with Tesla, X (Twitter), and other businesses to advance the purpose.
