ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) unveiled its first smartwatch during Mobile World Congress. In partnership with the TV company Nickelodeon, CEO Raffaele Annecchino considers this a move that strengths Viacom’s position across the connectivity ecosystem.

During his MWC1 keynote, Annecchino announced the launch of the NickWatch, specifying that it was made for the youth market. The smartwatch offers a vast range of entertainment features, tapping into the company’s vast portfolio of media assets.

According to VCNI, the smartwatch will offer children independence and entertainment offerings fuelled by Nickelodeon’s characters. The underlying technology of the NickWatch promotes physical activity and social play, along with sound effects, games, and music features.

The platform will further allow maps, text, and voice calls from parents to track their children. Annecchino described the move as a “milestone” that will harness the power of both companies’ brands.

“This strategic product launch will leverage our IP and content to further strengthen our position as a leading commercial partner with diverse consumer touchpoints creating a new immersive experience.”

In a chat with GSMA Ltd CEO John Hoffman, Annecchino also talked about the impact of 5G on the media industry, commenting that he is excited about the way connectivity will “define the future of entertainment.”

He further explained that 5G has opened up numerous new opportunities for engaging with customers, tagging into immersive action, AR, VR, better interaction with talent, innovative venue production, and opening up revenue opportunities with partners.

He commented on collaborations with telecoms operators, claiming that they’re increasing due to more significant streaming activity. According to him, strong partnerships with the sector are “critical” for Viacom’s business.

The device will be available for purchase in 2022 and will come with the smartwatch body, two watch bands (one adult, premium band and one playful Nickelodeon band) and a character-led charging base.
