GITEX 2021: Mimecast brings its powerful, AI-led security system CyberGraph

Werno Gevers, Regional Manager at Mimecast Middle East, on participating in GITEX and the new offerings that consumers and trade can expect

Mimecast, a leading email security and cyber resilience company, will once again be a part of the GITEX Technology Week.

A company that focuses on delivering relentless protection as its motto, Mimecast is at the forefront of tackling the biggest security challenges. It has built an intentional and scalable design ideology that solves the number one cyberattack vector – email.

In Dubai this week, Mimecast will be showcasing all its security services, but are also most excited about showcasing its new artificial intelligence offering, Mimecast CyberGraph.

ITP.net spoke to Werno Gevers, Regional Manager at Mimecast Middle East, to find out more about the company’s plans at the GITEX this week…

What are the key highlights of your participation at this year’s GITEX?

We will be showcasing all our security services during the show – advanced email and web security solutions, brand protection capabilities and awareness training. But we are excited to introduce our new artificial intelligence (AI) offering, Mimecast CyberGraph.

CyberGraph is a new add-on for Mimecast Secure Email Gateway (SEG) that is engineered to use AI to help detect sophisticated phishing and impersonation attacks.  CyberGraph creates an identity graph that is built to store information about relationships between all senders and recipients. The graph is designed to detect anomalies and leverages machine learning technology to help organisations stay one step ahead of threat actors by alerting employees to potential cyber threats.

What will be different in your participation this year as compared to previous years?

As a channel first organisation, we have decided to focus our efforts this year on our partnership with one of our distributors, Bulwark Technologies. We will be exhibiting on their stand and they will assist us in setting up meetings with their strategic partners and customers.

We are committed to helping organisations on their cybersecurity journeys and want to ensure that they are aware of how our offering forms a crucial part of their overall security and resilience postures. By working with a strategic partner, we hope to educate decision makers on our services and demonstrate how advanced security solutions can protect their organisations from growing cyberattacks.

As businesses continue to embrace hybrid models, which technologies should they focus on to remain competitive?

Our focus is on cybersecurity so our advice would be to ensure that their systems are adequately protected to avoid the catastrophic impact of a cyberattack. Hybrid work models offer a plethora of potential attack surfaces, with remote working employees especially vulnerable due to the generally lower levels of protection against cyberattacks on home networks and personal devices.

As hybrid work models are likely to remain for the foreseeable future, it is vital that organisations stay abreast of the new security risks and challenges created by hybrid work models.

User behaviour plays a major role in strengthening organisational defences and building greater resilience against data breaches. Organisations should invest in ongoing awareness training to equip end-users with knowledge and skills that can help avoid risky behaviour.

A sharp rise in brand impersonation attacks is a cause of concern globally. Mimecast threat intelligence detected a 44% rise in brand impersonation emails directed at our customers in 2020, reaching an average of 27 million such emails every month. Organisations across the region will need to look beyond their own perimeters to protect customers and partners.

Tools such as DMARC are essential in protecting their own domains from compromise. Additionally, machine learning powered web scanning and analysis of key indicators – such as new domain registrations and the issuing of security certificates – could help organisations stop cybercriminals before they can take their impersonation attacks live.

An over-reliance on boxed security solutions that accompany popular business productivity tools such as Microsoft 365, could be leaving organisations vulnerable to sophisticated attack. If native security tools fail to halt an attack, another tool should be able to compensate. A defence-in-depth strategy can improve an organisation’s overall security posture. Such a strategy needs to provide protection and visibility within the organisation, at the email perimeter, and beyond, where the aforementioned brand exploitation and impersonation attacks can wreak havoc on organisations and their supply chains.

Why are tech shows such as GITEX important despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and what does it mean for Mimecast to be at the event?

GITEX remains a crucial event on the calendar as it offers an ideal opportunity to meet and engage with security decision makers. The last year and a half has been challenging and we’re looking forward to face-to-face time, as this can only help us build relationships and grow our networks.

As a leading email security and cyber resilience company, events like this are important for Mimecast. It offers us the opportunity join industry peers and educate the market about the evolving threat landscape and the importance of implementing strong and layered defences to prevent sophisticated attacks.

We have been participating at GITEX for the last several years and it has done a lot to help build our brand and position us as a key security player in the region. GITEX is a great networking event and we are pleased to be back at the event this year.
