Google Cloud launches new cloud data centres in Qatar

The launch of the Doha cloud region is a response to the escalating demand for cloud services in Qatar and the broader Middle East region

In a strategic move to accelerate Qatar’s digital transformation, Google Cloud has inaugurated its Doha cloud region. This milestone is expected to drive economic growth and contribute a substantial $18.9 billion to Qatar’s economy between 2023 and 2030. The cloud region’s launch aligns with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which aims to propel the country into a thriving digital economy through innovation and technological advancements.

Meeting growing demands and fostering innovation

The launch of the Doha cloud region is a response to the escalating demand for cloud services in Qatar and the broader Middle East region. Google Cloud recognises the importance of cultivating a digital infrastructure that aligns with global standards and policies, enabling efficient economic growth and improved quality of life.

With Qatar’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the Qatari government facilitating the growth of cloud adoption through supportive policies, Google Cloud’s entry into the market was made possible. This investment in infrastructure and resources underscores Google Cloud’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in Qatar’s digital future and technological advancement.

Empowering economic growth

The inauguration of the Doha cloud region marks a significant milestone for Qatar’s digital ambitions. Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, emphasised that this venture aligns with Qatar’s comprehensive vision for achieving the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030. By establishing a robust digital infrastructure and leveraging cutting-edge technology, Qatar aims to enhance economic and productivity growth.

“The new cloud region will contribute to giving impetus to economic and productivity growth, and will allow various government and private companies and institutions within Qatar the opportunity to achieve significant efficiency gains by adopting flexible features in dealing with digital technology,” he added.

Delivering top notch cloud services

Google’s Doha Cloud Region eliminates the requirement for customers in Qatar to own or manage physical data centres and servers. This particular benefit holds significant value for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Qatar, as they constitute a substantial 97 percent of all registered private sector companies. By leveraging Google Cloud’s offerings, these enterprises can pursue their growth ambitions more effectively.

The newly launched Doha region is seamlessly integrated into Google Cloud’s extensive global network, which encompasses 37 regions and 112 zones.

“The launch of the new Google Cloud region in Qatar marks a significant milestone in our growing partnership with Google Cloud that started in 2020 with an agreement to establish Google Cloud’s region in Doha,” said Ahmad Al Sayed, Minister of State and Chairman of Qatar Free Zones Authority (QFZ).

“This will further accelerate Qatar’s digital transformation and the realisation of Qatar National Vision 2030 that aims to build a sustainable knowledge-based economy.”
