Earlier this year, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed its plans to test autonomous taxis, which have now begun.
On Monday, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, attended the maiden concept flight of the autonomous air taxi (AAT).
“After the remarkable success of the first driverless metro in the region, we are glad to witness today the test flight of the Autonomous Air Taxi,” said Sheikh Hamdan. “This is another testament to our commitment to driving positive change. We are constantly exploring opportunities to serve the community and advance the prosperity and happiness of society.”

The RTA signed an agreement with Volocopter, a specialist manufacturer of autonomous air vehicles based in Germany.
The two-seater AAT is capable of 30 minutes continuous flying time at a speed of 50kph but it can reach a maximum of 100kph. It is fitted with nine independent battery systems which has a quick charging time of 40 minutes, along with flight controls and 18 rotors for safe cruising.
