A woman has been killed after being hit by an Uber self-driving car.

The 49-year old woman was struck by the car while crossing the street. The car was in autonomous mode at the time, although a human monitor was in the car.

It is believed the woman was not crossing at a pedestrian crossing, and stepped suddenly from a central median into traffic, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. She was struck by the self-driving Volvo SUV, and later died of her injuries.

The accident occurred in Tempe, Arizona on Sunday evening. Tempe Police said that its preliminary investigation showed that the car was traveling at 38 mph in a 35 mph zone and made no attempt to brake.

Uber has suspended all testing of its autonomous cars in the US in response.
