Maktoob improves its free e-mail service

Auto Scan feature will check incoming and outgoing e-mail for viruses and alert original sender of problems.

Maktoob.com has added some more value to its free e-mail service by adding a virus scanning facility.

All messages going in and out of Maktoob’s e-mail servers are now automatically checked for any potential gremlins.

“A majority of the computer viruses that threaten computer systems and networks today are spread through email communication,” said Manal Barghouthi, messaging systems manager, Maktoob.com.

“The rapid spread of viruses such as ‘I Love You’ and ‘Melissa’ in recent times through this method has forced many corporations and individuals to ensure complete virus protection for their computer systems from harmful incoming email.”

Auto Notification System

When Maktoob.com finds an e-mail in a virus, the sender is notified so that he can carry out maintenance work on his own systems.

Maktoob.com claimed that its 400,000-plus user base is growing as a result of the new service.

“We are already seeing a steady increase in users shifting to Maktoob from other email services due to this unique feature,” said Barghouthi.

The introduction of the Auto Scan service follows the addition of a feature last month that lets users record audio messages and attach them to e-mails.

Maktoob.com has money to invest in its service after EFG-Hermes recently bought a 20% stake in the company.
