In addition to being the most written about virus in July, the SirCam virus dominated the month’s virus charts. According to figures released by anti-virus software vendor, Sophos, SirCam accounted for 65.2% of all reported virus attacks. The Magistr virus, once so popular, was relegated to a lowly 10.4% of all reported incidents.
“SirCam, the virus which has hit the headlines by forwarding personal documents to everyone in the infected user’s inbox, has affected thousands of businesses this month – even the FBI’s NIPC division were hit,” says Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.
“The fact that such a high profile virus is continuing to trick users is particularly worrying – anti-virus software is available to stop this worm, yet it is still spreading. Users who do not want to risk their confidential documents being leaked to all of their contacts should update their software and follow safe computing guidelines,” he adds.
Although SirCam dominated, 1276 new viruses were discovered during July, taking Sophos’ virus stable up to a mind boggling 66170.
