Users warned over bad ‘Da Vinci’ code

The ‘Da Vinci Code’ hardly needs to attract more controversy, with demonstrations against the movie being held around the world, yet last month it was also being blamed for spreading — albeit indirectly — malicious code.

Security firm Sophos was calling on internet users to be wary of an unsolicited e-mail campaign offering a free copy of the bestselling novel by Dan Brown.

While the e-mail purported to be soliciting readers to join nothing more sinister than a book club, Sophos warned users to steer clear.

Bluetooth users were also being warned last month to avoid replying to the message ‘Receive message via Bluetooth from Da Vinci Code?’ as it was being used to spread a virus which reportedly destroys all data on the device affected.
