‘Use attacks as a learning event,’ says SolarWinds’ VP of security

We caught up with Tim Brown at Black Hat, the much-awaited technology gathering of the MENA region, he shared some insights on cybersecurity awareness, cyber resilience and recovery.

“Recovery takes time. It is important to understand that attacks or incidents happen. Share the procedure and process with others so it doesn’t happen to them. Use incidents as a learning event which helps the industry and world move forward,” said Tim Brown, the VP of security at SolarWinds.

We caught up with Brown at Black Hat, the much-awaited technology gathering of the MENA region, he shared some insights on cybersecurity awareness, cyber resilience and recovery.

Why is an event like Black Hat important for cybersecurity awareness?

Black Hat is one of the biggest technology gathering in the world and Saudi Arabia this year is launching the first edition of Black Hat in MENA region. SolarWinds, with its participation at the event, is spreading the word around cybersecurity and bring security professionals together. We help get a concentration effort to improve security of the world and Black Hat along with the kingdom, plays an important role in this.

What are some of the best practices for cybersecurity strategy and cyber resilience?

Always start with the basics and a great cyber hygiene. Another important practice is education, to ensure that the risks in place are well understood and those risks are tackled with the right tools. One mistake that is commonly found, is the even spreading of security across the environment. It is crucial to focus security efforts on significant areas.

How is SolarWinds aiding organisations in cybersecurity and cyber resilience?

We have been aiding public and private partnerships to bring together a better sense of the supply chain as supply chain attacks have been more prevalent. This is one of the key area that SolarWinds work on. We ensure to have a way to measure risk within the big and small supply chains for companies and help drive them to the next level of security.

What are some of the tips for ransomware recovery?

In a lot of the recovery, whether ransomware, or major incident, the priority should be to bring the customers first. Businesses should always pay attention to customers and make them their primary goal. Being open, honest and humble about the situation is the best bet. An honest word on the recovery procedure will move the needle forward. Go broader with the messaging and recovery so others can also learn from it.
