Dubai announces digital driver’s licence – here’s how it works

Dubai RTA introduces new feature that eliminates the need to carry your physical driver’s licence card

Forgot your driver’s licence at home? Don’t worry, it could happen to the best of us.

Good news! Now, thanks to the Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)’s new service, exclusively available for iOS users, you can bid farewell to those nerve-wracking situations where you realise you forgot your license at home. Simply hop on over to the ‘Apple Wallet’ and save your licence via the ‘RTA Dubai’ mobile application.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Register an online account with RTA

  1. Download the RTA Dubai app from the Apple App Store.
  2. Open the app and locate the ‘Login/Register’ button on the homepage. Tap on it.
  3. Log in using your UAE Pass credentials.
  4. If your UAE Pass and RTA account are not already linked, you will receive a pop-up notification prompting you to link them. If you don’t have an RTA account, tap on ‘Register’.
  5. Your personal details, such as full name, email address, nationality, and mobile number, will be automatically entered by the UAE Pass. Verify these details and proceed to create a username and password for your RTA account.
  6. Enter the one-time password (OTP) sent to your mobile number via SMS to complete the registration process.

Step 2: Access your digital card

  1. Locate the ‘My Docs’ option on the menu tab at the bottom of your mobile screen. Tap on it.
  2. Upon accessing ‘My Docs’, you will be prompted to link your Traffic Code (TC) number. Enter your TC number and license issue date if required. This step is not necessary if your UAE Pass and RTA account are already linked.
  3. Open the ‘My Licence’ tab, where you will find your digital driver’s license.
  4. Below the digital license card, you will see an option called ‘Add to Apple Wallet’. Tap on it. The app will display a digital version of your license, resembling a horizontally-oriented representation of the physical driver’s license. This digital version will contain all the information present on both sides of your physical license. Tap on ‘Add’ to proceed.
  5. The card will then be automatically saved to your Apple Wallet for easy access.

You can also use the same feature add your vehicle registration card to your Apple Wallet. Once this process is completed, both your driving license and registration card will be accessible offline.

Here’s how you can access them offline:

  1. Open the ‘Wallet’ app on your phone.
  2. Within the app, you will be able to view your driver’s license along with your vehicle registration card if you have added it to the Apple Wallet.
