UAE: Bayanat AI, Yahsat elevates space capabilities

The comprehensive alliance extends beyond the mere augmentation of satellite capabilities

Bayanat AI and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) have joined forces to amplify their earth observation (EO) space programme. This expansion involves increasing the number of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites from five to seven, with the primary goal of delivering near real-time, high-definition images of ground conditions throughout the Middle East. This partnership, as highlighted in their press release, is poised to cater not only to the domestic market but also to meet the needs of international customers.

The comprehensive alliance extends beyond the mere augmentation of satellite capabilities. ICEYE, a key participant in this joint venture, is set to bring its technological prowess, training, and expertise to enhance the overall project. This multifaceted approach is geared towards providing advanced geospatial intelligence, enabling a diverse range of applications, from environmental monitoring to disaster response.

Hasan Al Hosani, the Managing Director of Bayanat, emphasised the broader implications of this technological advancement. By developing a robust domestic SAR satellite industry, the collaboration aims to diversify the economy, foster the creation of high-tech jobs, and bolster strategic independence. The move aligns with a broader vision of technological self-sufficiency and resilience.

Ali Al Hashemi, Group CEO of Yahsat, expressed pride in the role their company plays in this transformative partnership. Notably, he underscored the significance of extending the nation’s capabilities in space technology, reinforcing the UAE’s leadership in the space sector across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The collaboration is seen as an active contribution to the realisation of the UAE’s ambitious space strategy, positioning the country as a key player in the global space exploration landscape.

In addition to the collaborative efforts, Yahsat recently disclosed its financial performance for the first nine months of 2023. The company reported net profits valued at $71.75 million, attributable to its owners. This financial stability serves as a testament to the economic viability and success of the venture, further solidifying the partners’ commitment to advancing space technology and contributing to the overall growth of the sector.
